Head Start Children

Head Start Quality Program

Head Start promotes school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of low-income children. Head Start programs serve children ages 3 - 5 and their families.

Head Start is a unique program that supports the development of relationships between children and their families.

The year 2005 was an exciting year because we celebrated the 40th year anniversary of the creation and development of the Head Start Program.

Recovery Package for Head Start

President Barack Obama has signed into law the economic recovery package (H.R. 1: The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 - "ARRA") containing $2.1 billion for Head Start. The details of these funds are being work out by the Office of Head Start.

The new funds will be used with the greatest community need in mind, while supporting existing jobs and creating new ones in Head Start.

More families are qualifying for Head Start. With the support of ARRA more Head Start slots and more full-time Head Start programs could be available. Parents will have the opportunity to find work while their children are provided with a safe, high-quality, learning environment.

This funding would not be possible without all the efforts of National Head Start Association and also those members of Congress who recognize early childhood education as a priority. We also appreciate those of you who have volunteered your time and visited www.saveheadstart.org .

There is still much to do with the ARRA implementation and other important legislative priorities for the Head Start Community. Become a part of the Head Start effort. Visit the National Head Start Association web site today www.nhsa.org .
